A hydro jet is a tool used by plumbers to clear clogged drains. It generally consists of a hose, a special nozzle, a water tank, and a motor that delivers pressurized water into clogged pipes. The most commonly used nozzle sends the water in at an angle.

Portable models may be placed on a wheeled cart, with the hose wound onto a large spool on one level and the motor on another.

There are also much larger hydro jet units that are mounted on a truck or trailer. Plumbers may use either type, depending on the location and severity of the clog or pipe.

In comparison, a hydro jet uses pressurized water to flush clogs and debris out of pipes and drains. Drain snakes are frequently used by homeowners to clear drains, while hydro jets should only be used by experienced plumbers.

CAN THEY DAMAGE PIPES?

The short answer is probably not. Though the pressure created by a hydro jet is high—between 1,500 and 5,000 psi—most pipes can withstand it without difficulty. If you own a newer home that has sturdy plastic pipes, they can easily withstand hydro jetting.

TYPES OF DRAINS

In the right hands, hydro jetting can be used on almost any drain from a small home bathroom to the main sewer line. That doesn’t mean every clogged drain needs to be hydro jetted.

WILL IT BREAK MY SEWER?

It is very unlikely that hydro jetting would break your sewer. Before a plumber considers hydro jetting a sewer pipe, they will do a thorough inspection using a camera to examine the pipe.
